This was me: "Going through old books meant that I could read the library cards. And oh, the stories those could tell! I saw the names of borrowers who were older than me, had graduated long before I was born, even!" Just wow.
I'm trying to remember picking up the first book that I was not supposed to read... haha! It was an old copy of Gone with the Wind, which I read when I was about 8 years old while having to sit up all night during a lengthy asthma attack. There was a lot of breathlessness and heaving bosoms! But also disturbing scenes about civil war (in the southern U.S.).
Oh wow! Props to 8 year old you, though, for taking it on (even if you weren't supposed to). When did you realize you had to put it down?
Speaking of heaving bosoms, a lot of my friends told me that their first experience with "adult books" was their mothers' or helpers' romance novels! Stuff like Precious Hearts. xD
Well, by "not supposed to" I mean I was "not meant to" and not expected to read it, though it was sitting right there on the shelf. I kind of doubt that my parents even read it, since they were both only non-fiction/news readers. Anyway, I finished it (although I suspect that I skipped around some parts), because it was a long asthma attack. And I never picked up a book by Margaret Mitchell again, LOL. (also in retrospect it was pretty racist)
Thank you for the glimpse into your reading journey through libraries. My personal library consists largely of ebooks because I’ve run out of room for more shelves! But I like being able to carry hundreds of books in one little device.

I'm so happy this resonated with you, Amy! Thank you for reading. :)
The Little Prince remains one of my all-time favorites!
It really is a wonderful book. I should re-read it soon!
we had to read The Little prince in french class at that's when I realized how little I understood in french.
That sounds fascinating, reading a book in the language it was originally written in. And as an exercise in learning another language!

Great post, Regina, thanks!
